The Kovac family successfully won their lawsuit today at a Paris court against Bosnian Serb war criminal Radovan Karadzic, seeking compensation for wartime abuses suffered in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the early 90s.

The court in France awarded the Kovac family around $280,000 in damages.

Radovan Karadzic is currently on trial at The Hague for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The lawsuit also includes Bosnian Serb General Ratko Mladic who is wanted for the ethnic cleansing committed during the Bosnian war.

Zuhra Kovac is the first person to successfully sue for compensation from a Bosnian Serb leader through a European court.

The family has found refuge in Angers, France where they currently live after being persecuted from their native Bosnia.
