Richard Holbrooke, the U.S. diplomat and chief architect of the Dayton Peace Agreement has died at the age of 69, after receiving a second round of surgery to treat his heart condition.

He died one day before the 15th anniversary of the Dayton Peace Agreement’s official signing.
